The message
The beach is dark as night has arrived on cue
He walks up the boardwalk to the "Black Herring" bar,
He kicks his boots on the first step. There is still sand on them,
But it's more of a gesture of curtesy.
He sits at the last stool, lights a cigarette and looks around.
"What's up" Quinn the bartender says with a nod. Without asking Quinn pours
A bourbon with a water back.
"Just get back?" Quinn asks.
Jt nods, shaking his head saying,
"I got to get out of this place, I need a normal job.
At sea three weeks at a time, fuck, everything I own smells like fish."
Quinn looks at him with a chuckle and grins.
Tapping his cigarette in the ashtray with slow purpose, he looks up at Quinn
And randomly says, "I ran into this girl on the beach today, I mean literally man, we bumped
In to each other. She looked right into my eyes. I'll never forget her eyes, those golden hazel eyes.
He pauses for a minute, "Do you believe in love at first sight?" he asks Quinn.
"Like fate, you know." Quinn nods with a bit of skepticism. as he pours a beer.
With a shrug of his shoulders Jt says "Shit, all she probably remembers is that I smell of fish."
They both chuckle.
It's a slow night at the Black Herring.
The juke box is on auto play keeping everyone company.
Kenny and Stacy are slow dancing to "Blue Bayou",
Linda Ronstadt's version.
Quinn leans on the bar and asks jt if he wants to have a sesh tomorrow. Quinn plays a Strat
Guitar, JT plays an old used Fender bass.
Jt says sure man, let's do some Tommy Bolin, I got that "Post Toastee" riff down tight.
Quinn nods.
It's getting late, Stacy is asleep in the booth on Kenny's shoulder.
Quinn is stacking chairs atop the tables in the back.
With a yawn, jt Snuffs his cigarette in the ash tray and finishes his bourbon,
When a lady in a blue hat walks up to the bar, leaves her newspaper just to the left of jt
And says, "have a good night darling".
She walks out of the bar.
Jt leaves a tip for Quinn as he stands, glancing at the open newspaper on the bar.
There is an ad circled in red, that reads, "Opportunity is waiting".
Jt looks at it for a moment as if it's meant for him.
He says to Quinn, "have a good one" and walks out of the bar.
Walking home, Jt can't stop thinking of the girl with hazel eyes.
A drop in an ocean
Ripples like a wave
As the sands of time
Will ultimately save...
